The Florida A&M University Board of Trustees met Monday to discuss the ongoing investigation into the hazing-related death of school band drum-major Robert Champion. The University’s Dr. Larry Robinson chairs the school’s Internal Crisis Management Committee. Over the past weeks he’s spoken with other universities and says hazing may not be limited to fraternal organizations.
“One of the key points that we find pretty much everywhere we called was the universal nature of hazing. Most of them warn that you cannot assume that hazing is limited to just sororities and fraternities. It tends to perpetuate all student organizations in a university environment.”
FAMU drum major Robert Champion died November 19th following an Orlando football game. An autopsy revealed he died of blunt-force trauma and hemorrhaging. Champion’s family is planning a lawsuit against FAMU, and law enforcement officials say formal charges are pending. The board will return with additional updates on the Monday following the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
