The U.S. Department of Education has asked Florida leaders to pump more funding into FAMU, pointing to a “longstanding and ongoing underinvestment” by the state.

The decision could have repercussions for Florida State University and other higher ed institutions in the state.

Governor Ron DeSantis is asking to see all the programs related to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and Critical Race Theory in the state’s public higher education system. He also wants to know if those programs are being funded with state money, and how much.

State colleges and universities have until Jan. 13 to submit information to the DeSantis administration about resources related to diversity, equity and inclusion and critical race theory.

During the annual State of the University address, President Richard McCullough highlighted an influx of applicants but said FSU has been “challenged” in bringing in Black students.
