Florida's Lt. Governor Jeanette Nunez Talks Census, Guns, Immigration & Glass Ceilings

Florida’s Lieutenant Governor has been making the rounds, promoting Governor Ron DeSantis’ legislative agenda. WFSU's Lynn Hatter sat down with Nunez recently to get her take on some of the big decisions state lawmakers are facing.

Jeanette Nunez is a woman of many talents. Gardening isn’t one of them.

“I don’t do well with plants. I always kill orchids, you name it, I kill it all," she said. 

What is her thing is state policy. Nunez is leading the state’s census efforts as well as a slew of other things. Florida is among the last states to form a committee for the once-a-decade count that determines both federal funding and Congressional representation. That's where the conversation begins.

1. You will now be leading Florida’s census efforts but there’s been no state money put toward this. How will it work?
2. The Senate has just advanced a plan to close the gun show loophole and require background checks for private sales. What’s the administration’s position on this?
3. How is he when it comes to E-Verify? Now, the governor has staked out a position. He wants universal E-Verify for public and private businesses. Now you have a sort-of compromise, E-Verify light bill that’s emerged that would only extend that to government contractors. Is he all or nothing on this, or is there wiggle room?
4. This year marks 100 years since women earned the right to vote in the United States. What does this anniversary mean to you?
5. So, there’s one glass ceiling in Florida that a woman has yet to break. What will it take for that to shatter?
