Progressive political and environmental groups rallied in front of the Old Florida Capitol on Saturday (8/26). It was part of a statewide effort to send a message to the state's governor and Republican U-S Senator.
Saturday's midday Capitol rally was coordinated by Jordan Anderson.
"Here at this particular event we have the Sierra Club, Rethink Energy (Florida), the Democratic Action Network, Leon County Young Democrats and of course we're For Our Future," he said, ticking off the participating organizations.
The Sierra Club's Organizer Merrilee Malwitz-Jipson said this weekend's landfall of Hurricane Harvey served to underscore one of the groups' messages, that climate change poses a clear and present danger to the United States in general and Florida in particular.
"We're seeing more extreme weather conditions every day," she worried. "What's happening in Texas and also what happened recently a year ago in Florida, these weather patterns are changing so dramatically we can't keep up with them."
Both Governor Scott and Senator Marco Rubio have been on record denying any human influence on climate conditions.
