Immigration rights advocates say they’re suffering a double blow now that the outgoing Obama Administration has cancelled a so-called “wet-foot, dry-foot,” policy favoring Cubans.
Florida Immigrant Coalition’s Paola Calvo says wet-foot, dry-foot wasn’t perfect. Her group criticized the policy because it gave immediate recognition to Cubans who reached U.S. soil, but not Haitians.
However, Calvo says it at least gave some hope to Cubans desperate to flee a dictatorial regime.
“You know, now we’re adding another category of people, the Cuban community, who are stuck in this immigration limbo.”
Activists are planning a series of rallies this weekend around the state to protest the change, as well as a promised crackdown on immigration by the incoming Trump Administration.
