State Adds Jobs, Unemployment Rate Stays Steady

Department of Economic Opportunity Chief Cissy Proctor
State of Florida

Florida’s unemployment rate for August hasn’t budged, but the state continues to add jobs.

Florida’s August unemployment rate is 4.7 percent.  It was 4.7 in May and June as well, but state jobs czar Cissy Proctor says employers are hiring.

“Businesses across the state added another 22,600 private sector jobs in August," Proctor says. "It takes the total number of jobs created under the governor’s administration to over 1,191,000 private sector jobs.”

Proctor says there are another 250,000 openings remaining.  Although Florida’s unemployment rate is in neutral, it’s two tenths of a percent lower than the national rate.

Nick Evans came to Tallahassee to pursue a masters in communications at Florida State University. He graduated in 2014, but not before picking up an internship at WFSU. While he worked on his degree Nick moved from intern, to part-timer, to full-time reporter. Before moving to Tallahassee, Nick lived in and around the San Francisco Bay Area for 15 years. He listens to far too many podcasts and is a die-hard 49ers football fan. When Nick’s not at work he likes to cook, play music and read.
