Florida Governor Rick Scott has approved a package of consumer-friendly changes for state-backed property insurer Citizens. Sen. Anitere Flores (R-Miami) sponsored the proposal in this year’s legislative session.
“You’ve heard me talk about the take out offers and right now they just get a letter and says this is the company you’re going to go to,” Flores said on the Senate floor. “So what this bill would require them to say is, well, these are a couple of different companies that would like to have your business, here’s the comparable coverage and here is what your estimate will be—here’s what you’ll be charged.”
Last year Gov. Scott vetoed a similar measure with greater protections for consumers receiving take out offers. He argued at the time it would undermine efforts to move customers into the private market.
