Bill Naming Beach After Civil Rights Leaders Passes Senate

Florida Archives

The Florida Senate wants to rename a state beach after Broward County civil rights activists Eula Johnson and Von D. Mizell.  They led a series of wade-ins there in the 1960s.

John U. Lloyd state park is a beach in Fort Lauderdale, and in the early sixties it was the site of a civil rights movement.  Local NAACP President Eula Johnson and Doctor Von D. Mizell helped organize and lead a series of wade-ins to protest segregation on Florida’s beaches.  Fort Lauderdale Democratic Senator Chris Smith.

“Now is a good time to acknowledge why we have the park,” Sen. Chris Smith (D-Fort Lauderdale) says. “To acknowledge the people who put their life on the line for the park.   People who put their professions, who put their family lives on the line to get this park for us.”

The Senate bill would also rename a number of park facilities after other civil rights activists.  A similar House bill is waiting on a floor vote.
