In a few months, a new law will take effect aimed at providing businesses with better protections against fraud and identify theft.

Rep. Kathleen Passidomo (R-Naples) says she was inspired to sponsor this effort, coming off of another effort to protect the elderly from identify theft and fraud.

“As we did that bill, we realized it was not illegal to steal the identity of a business in the state of Florida because the statute was so outdated,” said Passidomo. “And, we have so many kinds of business entities in the state.”

She says the new law will also allow victims to have multiple ways to recover their financial losses as well as make it easier to restore their identity and credit.

“Interestingly, enough, there’s no way to get your credit back under Florida law,” she added. “So, we put in provisions on how you can restore your credit.”

With the Governor’s recent final approval, it takes effect October 1st.
