Big Bend Cares’ fall event, the Tallahassee AIDS Walk, draws hundreds of participants each year. This year’s walk will be held on Thursday, September 12th, 2024, at 6:30pm at the Southwood Nature Trail. We are celebrating the 34th Annual AIDS Walk this year, working alongside partner organizations Neighborhood Medical Center and Bond Community Health Center.

Individual community members, school and university groups, companies, and faith groups can register to walk as individuals or as part of a team beginning Monday, July 22nd. Walkers are encouraged to also become fundraisers themselves and help us reach our goal. After a memorial walk around the Southwood Nature Trail (starting at the intersection of Ivy Green Trail and Grove Park Dr.), we will gather to listen to speakers and music.

This event will be a celebration of all of those who have fought so hard to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS. All proceeds help Big Bend Cares in providing direct-care services for our clients and HIV prevention and education for the entire Big Bend region.

Jerry Lee, Senior Archaeologist with Florida’s Bureau of Archaeological Research, will present the results of the 2022 excavation of a small portion of El Camino Real, or the “royal road,” at Mission San Luis. El Camino Real linked San Luis and other missions of Apalachee Province to the Spanish capital of St. Augustine in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Mr. Lee will also discuss preliminary findings from the most recent excavations of a trash pit at Mission San Luis.

Program and parking are free and open to the public. Attendees will receive complimentary admission to the historic site. Be sure to shop in El Mercado before or after the program!

The event is being hosted at the North Florida Fairgrounds in Tallahassee, Florida, from August 31st to September 2nd, 2024, 10 am to 6 pm daily. The cost for the event is $10 per day, or $25 for three days. Children 15 and under admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

Venvi Art Gallery and Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra are delighted to host the “T is for Tallahassee: The ABC’s of our Musical City” book signing on August 24th from 2-5pm at Venvi Art Gallery. Curated by Amanda Kaorith Thompson and edited by Mary Ann Lindley, this bookshowcases the works of twenty-six artists in the Tallahassee area.

“T is for Tallahassee: The ABC’s of our Musical City” depicts a unique piece of Tallahassee’s history, local venues, iconic figures and events. Each page represents one of the 26 letters in the alphabet, while showcasing artwork created by one of twenty-six local artists. Venvi Art Gallery will showcase other works by many of the artists featured during the signing, where the book will also be available for purchase. It will be curated by Rachel Smith, Venvi Art Gallery’s manager.

Isabella Al-Sharif will offer an insightful talk about her artistic journey and the themes of her work.

Isabella Al-Sharif’s exhibition, “Her Temple,” delves into the profound exploration of feminine divinity and empowerment through her intricate and soulful paintings. Al-Sharif’s art embodies strength, power, and the essence of femininity. Each piece celebrates women as vital sources of life and creation, enriched with gold leaf and spiritual symbols that infuse the artwork with a divine aura.

“My work seeks to embody a portrait of strength, power, and multidimensional layers of feminine divinity,” states Al-Sharif. “Each painting weaves a thread of unity between women of all races, backgrounds, and ethnicities, channeling symbols and animals through spiritual themes and nature.”

With over 15 years of painting experience and a BFA from the College of Charleston, Isabella Al-Sharif’s artistic journey gained new depth following the birth of her daughter in 2015. This








pivotal moment ignited her passion for conveying female empowerment through bold hues, gold leaf, and large figurative paintings, each paired with a poem that gives the art a unique voice.

“Her Temple” is more than an exhibition; it is a powerful reminder of the strength inherent in feminine energy and a celebration of the diverse expressions of womanhood. Al-Sharif’s work aims to inspire and empower viewers, reminding them of their inner strength and resilience.

Trinity United Methodist Church will host a concert in honor of Austrian composer Anton Bruckner, who was born in 1824, the same year Trinity was founded. A string quartet, organ, and choir will perform selections of Bruckner's music.  The concert is free and open to the public..
