Venvi Art Gallery is pleased to present Subtropical: Living in a Sinking State, a solo exhibition by artist Sam McCoy. This exhibition will showcase over 30 of her original paintings. Subtropical: Living in a Sinking State will be on display from July 5th to August 18th, with its opening reception on July 5th from 5-8pm.
Subtropical: Living in a Sinking State showcases over 30 of McCoy’s original paintings, depicting scenes from Florida featuring brightly colored and loosely painted contemporary landscapes. Her works span from paintings she has created “en plein air”, local flora and fauna, and roadside gardens or tourist areas. According to McCoy, Florida is known for its tropical picturesque sunsets, springs, and theme parks. However, the reputation of the state is sometimes a bit shadier. She enjoys thinking about the concept of an “exotic paradise” and how it has influenced today’s culture. She is incredibly grateful for the beautiful landscape she is privileged to live in, but some days she feels an impending sense of doom as climate change affects the state and its landscape.
Sam McCoy is a contemporary painter whose work focuses on the interaction between the natural and hyperreal landscapes of Florida. Her works pull back the metaphorical curtain of the carefully curated image of Florida and its tourist destinations. She depicts many of the flora and fauna found in the state of Florida in her works. As an artist, McCoy is inspired by the vibrant colors used in citrus packing labels, as well as artists like Martin John Heade who paint majestic skies in the Hudson River School style. She also selects bits and pieces of other landscape paintings that capture her attention.
McCoy earned her BFA in Drawing and Painting from the University of Central Florida. She later earned her MFA at Florida State University, where she also briefly was an adjunct instructor in drawing, painting, and design. She also received a Plein Air Winner award from St. Mark’s Wildlife refuge. Currently, McCoy is the Senior Artist Programs Manager and Wildlife Artist at the Thomasville Center for the Arts, where she collaborates with artists and designers in curating their exhibitions to the public.

This 2nd Saturday program will be hosted at the historic Union Bank Museum, 219 Apalachee Parkway, Tallahassee. General admission is free, and the museum will be open 10:00am - 4:00pm.

Climb aboard as we explore the history of trains and railroads in Florida! Join us as we learn about the cities and resorts built because of railroads, historic train stations, trains you can visit across Florida, and the songs and lifestyle of the people who built the railways. We’ll complete our journey by making our own mini train cars.

The Summer Reading Program starts off on week one, June 9-15, at the Franklin County Public Libraries. Both library branches will have fun activities for both kids and adults during this program under the theme of “Adventure Begins At Your Library” and will feature the outdoors. There will be reading logs, prizes and incentives for all ages (including adults). Library programs are free and open to the public and participants do not need a library card to participate.

Tues, June 11th- Story Time “Going On A Bear Hunt” @ 3:30 PM at both branches.
Wed, June 12th- Cryptozoology for Kids @ 2:30 at Carrabelle. (and @ 11:00 AM at Eastpoint)
Fri, June 14th – Kids Program “String Art” @ 2:00 PM at Carrabelle. (Craft “No-Sew Sit Upons” @ 11:00 AM at Eastpoint. )

Those interested are invited to come to the Summer Reading Program kick off parties at 1:00 PM on Friday, June 7th at the Eastpoint branch and on Saturday, June 8th at the Carrabelle branch. At the kick off parties, participants can learn and register for summer reading events followed by an ice cream social.

On Thursday, June 13th, from 6:00-8:00 pm, join us for the opening reception of "The Quilts of Mrs. Gussie Beatrice Arnold Hill."

Florida State University's School of Dance and the Museum of Fine Arts are delighted to announce "The Quilts of Mrs. Gussie Beatrice Arnold Hill." Conceived and developed by School of Dance Professor Anjali Austin, the exhibition highlights quilts designed and crafted by her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Gussie Beatrice Arnold Hill, a Tallahassee native. This exhibit is dedicated to the brilliance of our ancestors—African Americans—who weathered the struggle with resilience and strength.

Free parking is available next to MoFA in the Call Street parking garage. Refreshments will be provided. This event is free and open to the public.

The cast of "The Music Man" will take you back to 1912 and River City, Iowa and join you celebratign Independence Day!

Join us at 11am at Leon High School to celebrate Independence Day. We will have the BBQ grills going with a variety of food options for purchase, including Jeremiah's Italian Ice for a sweet cool treat.
