The Franklin County Public Libraries hosts the next installment of their popular writers’ series, “Pen to Paper” on Monday, March 25 at 2 pm at the Carrabelle Branch Library. This session will feature authors Pat Stanford and Dawn Radford along with guest, Debbie Hooper. The Carrabelle Branch Library is located at 311 St. James Avenue (Hwy 98), Carrabelle, FL.




During the series, authors will discuss the works they have written and those in progress, followed by a question and answer session. These friendly and informal sessions provide an opportunity to meet these authors and question their experiences. They are open to anyone interested in learning about the writers or the writing process. There is no charge to attend.




Pat Stanford is an award-winning author and poet with the non-fiction Fixing Boo Boo, a story of traumatic brain injury, and two books of poetry Proverbs of My Season, Poetry of Transition, and a Motley Miscellany, Misfit Poems That Fit Together. All have won gold medals from the Florida Authors and Publishers Association's Annual President's Book Awards. She was born in Philadelphia, but moved to Florida with her farming family when she was a year old. She has poetry published in several anthologies and won second place in the 2004 Seven Hills Contest with her short story Divorce Sale. She lives in Tallahassee with her husband and rambunctious puppy and is currently working on a book of short stories as well as a second nonfiction.




Dawn Radford grew up in Apalachicola and later earned her Masters in Creative Writing and English from the University of North Carolina. Dawn Radford is both a published novelist and poet. She wrote a novel based in the panhandle area called Oyster Flats, a fictional tale set in a remote fishing village on the Florida Panhandle. She was the recipient of the prestigious Sherwood Anderson Award in 1993. Published and recognized in a variety of genres including poetry, short story, essay and scholarly research, she has taught in educational, literary, community and professional settings. She facilitates the local writer's forum at the Eastpoint Branch Library which gets together each month.




Debbie Hooper, a seasoned photographer, has published a tribute to Blast on the Bay Nashville Singer Songwriter Festival. In her book, 10 Year Blast on the Bay, Hooper weaves together pictures and reflective insights chronicling a decade of the Port St. Joe festival. What follows is a visual tribute of these precious moments preserved and collected by Debbie Hooper.

The Friends of Franklin County Public Libraries will be hosting another Soup-er Celebration - Soup, Bread, and Book Sale Event on Saturday, February 3, 2024 from 10 am - 1 pm at the Carrabelle Branch Library, 311 St. James Avenue, Carrabelle, FL.

This event will feature delicious homemade soups, freshly baked artisan breads and used books and DVDs. Local residents bring their delicious homemade soups like seafood bisques and gumbos, chili, Brunswick stew, and more and freshly baked artisan breads for the Friends to sell. Past years featured dozens of soups ranging from exotic to healthy to old-fashioned soups. The soups and breads sell out fast so visitors are encouraged to come early to get the best selection. Vintage and used books and used DVDs for all ages are also available for purchase.

This fun celebration will also offer a focus on local culture and art, with live music from the “Ukulilies”. In addition local artists and artisans will be showcasing some of their stunning local art and goods. This is a family friendly event and all are welcome.

The Friends of the Franklin County Public Libraries (FFCPL) is a 501(c)(3) organization. The funds raised from the Souper Celebration help the Friends to support the Franklin County Public Libraries in Eastpoint and Carrabelle, Florida and their goals to provide informational, educational and cultural materials for the benefit of persons of all ages in the community. The Friends supports many library programs like Summer Reading, Storytimes, Book Chats, Pen to Paper Writers Series, and more.

The Crooked River Lighthouse in Carrabelle, FL will be hosting their 2nd Annual Crooked River Park Fest on Saturday, February 3 from 9 am-9 pm. The all-day festival starts off with Country ‘Super’ Market from 9 am-5 pm. Then, in the evening, the festivities continue with a Special Event Concert with live music by the Funky ‘Taters, a 10-piece band that plays jazz, blues, funk, rock, country folk & reggae, plus evening tower climbs and a local food vendor under the stars from 6-9 pm. The Crooked River Lighthouse Museum & Gift Shop, Tower Climbs, and the 1894 Fresnel Lens exhibit will be open to visitors during both activities. Admission to the Country ‘Super’ Market is free to the public from 9 am – 5 pm. Tickets for the evening concert are available for $20. Discounted presale concert admission tickets are $15 and available online through February 2nd.

The morning kicks off with the Country ‘Super’ Market from 9 am-5 pm, which has been expanded to include food vendors and regional arts and crafts vendors. Visitors can shop for gifts and goodies like fresh roasted coffee, delicious baked goods, farm fresh produce, grass-fed beef, local art and photography, and handcrafted balms. Festival attendees can also grab a bite at Carrabelle’s own A Train Stop food truck, or a snack of festival favorites (kettle corn, boiled peanuts). Shoppers are also invited to browse some unique nautical gifts and souvenirs inside the Keeper’s House gift shop. Last year 40 vendors graced the park grounds. There will be something for everyone including children’s activities. Admission to the park for the Country Market is free to the public (9 am-5 pm).

In addition, general admission tower climbs are available to attendees (13 + yrs. old) for a suggested $5 donation during country market hours from 9 am - 5 pm. Children 12 and under are free accompanied by ticketed adult climbers and must be a minimum of 44 inches tall.

Guests can also enjoy a visit inside the Keeper’s House Museum to see the interactive exhibit for the Crooked River Lighthouse's original 4th Order Fresnel lens manufactured in Paris, France in 1894. After decades away in New Orleans, the lens is finally home in Carrabelle. This one-of-a-kind lens is glowing and turning again after almost 50 years! The new exhibit, a blend of science, culture, and history, highlights the role of Fresnel Lens technology. There is no charge for admission for a self-guided visit through the museum from 9 am - 5 pm but donations are warmly accepted to help preserve and maintain the Crooked River Lighthouse and its artifacts. As darkness falls, the stage will heat up for this Special Event Concert from 6 pm-9 pm. The Crooked River Lighthouse Park Stage will host a benefit concert featuring the Funky ‘Taters. The Funky ‘Taters, a 10-piece band from Tallahassee, Florida, plays jazz, blues, funk, rock, country folk, and reggae, a mix that has been called the "Music of the Gulf Coast Highway." The Gulf Coast route travels from the East coast of Florida, through New Orleans, all the way to Texas.

Clear skies permitting, Special Event Night Tower Climbs will allow climbers a chance to spot Carrabelle Beach, Dog Island, and St. George Sound. Special Event Climbs are available from 6 pm to 9 pm at 15-minute intervals. Climbers must be 13 + years of age or accompanied by an adult. Advance climb reservations are available now for $10. Reservations are required at scheduled 15-minute intervals throughout the evening event. All climbers must be at least 44 inches tall.

This special evening event will also feature a local food vendor, bonfire, and after-hours visits in the Keeper’s House Museum. Special museum docent-led tours of the Fresnel Lens Exhibit will be available every 30 minutes for a $3 suggested donation from 6-9 pm.

Tickets for the evening event are available for $20. Children under 12 are free with an adult ticket holder. All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the maintenance of Crooked River Lighthouse Park.

Make plans to visit the Thomasville History Center on Sunday, February 11 for a special two-part event that kicks off our new year of programs. We’ll bring you into our world and share how museums operate, how we care for and display our collections, and more.

Join us for “Show & Tell” between 12pm and 4pm as bring back last year’s popular format for our traditional Annual Meeting. Get up close and hands-on with artifacts from our collection at fourteen different stations featuring artifacts donated by community members in the last year and learn how we will incorporate those artifacts into our future storytelling. We cannot wait to show and tell you all about what we achieved in 2023.

We will allow visitors to get a peek behind the scenes at our collections with tours of our storage at 1pm, 2pm, and 3:30pm with members of our staff. At 3pm, we will hold a brief review of the History Center's accomplishments in 2023 and welcome our new slate of Board Members. This will include a brief business meeting, and all are welcome to attend.

The Annual Meeting coincides with Super Museum Sunday, the state-wide free admission day for institutions across the state organized by the Georgia Historical Society. Both the History Center and Lapham-Patterson House will be open for free self-guided tours from Noon until 4pm.

The Thomasville History Center formed in 1952 to collect and preserve the history of Thomas County. This year, we begin our 71st year of storytelling. The museum within the Flowers-Roberts House opened in 1972. Since 1972, the Thomasville History Center’s collections have grown to include more than 500,000 artifacts and archival materials and eight historic structures. The History Center, in partnership with the state of Georgia, also operates the historic Lapham-Patterson House. Our board, staff, and growing membership invite you to join us in our mission to enrich the community through the exploration and discovery of its history, people, and stories.

We Love Veterans Festival

We Love Veterans Festival aims to create an enjoyable and supportive environment for Veterans and their families, combining entertainment, community engagement, and access to valuable resources.

Speaker: Dr. Reginald Ellis, Associate Professor, Florida A&M University

Dr. Reginald Ellis discusses the 136-year history of Florida A&M University. Founded in 1887, the University has achieved many successes and faced many struggles to become one of the nation’s premier Historically Black Colleges and Universities. This presentation will discuss FAMU’s history and the major events, individuals, and broader historical trends that helped to shape its development and identity.
