  • Midtown Reader invites you to the exciting launch event for Nicholas Goodly's new book of poetry, Star Power. Nicholas will be in conversation with FSU creative writing professor, Ravi Howard. As joyful as it is painfully honest, this collection is a can't miss!

    ABOUT THE BOOK

A celebration and testament to the tenacity of life on the margins, brilliantly illuminating Black and queer experience.

In this collection, a jubilant testimony to the joys and hardships of the Black queer experience, poet Nicholas Goodly explores language that venerates the saints of their life—those people in cultures and communities who are not often seen as the powerful, brave, and heroic figures that they are. An ode to endurance, love, and play, Star Power carves out a place of pleasure and solace, a personal pantheon of legends from the Wonder Twins, Thundercat, and Tiffany Pollard to Venus Xtravaganza, the Olsen Twins, and Grace Jones.

Defiant and unapologetic, Star Power charts a path of joy and wonder, cutting through caustic history and an oppressive present to speak directly to these vibrant lives, which have long been overlooked.

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Nicholas Goodly is the author of Black Swim. Goodly is the recipient of the 2017 Chapbook Fellowship from the Poetry Society of America and was a finalist for the 2020 Jake Adam York Prize and the runner-up for the 2019 Cave Canem Poetry Prize.

    ABOUT PROF. RAVI HOWARD

Ravi Howard is the author of two novels, Like Trees, Walking and Driving the King. He won the Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence and is a National Endowment for the Arts Literary Fellow. His work has appeared in Oxford American, Gulf Coast, Salon, Atlanta, The New York Times, Saw Palm and Best American Mystery and Suspense. He is an associate professor in the Creative Writing Program at Florida State University.
  • Venvi Art Gallery is excited to announce "Piecemeal Landscape", a two-artist exhibition of works by artists Sam McCoy and Chris Rivera. This exhibition will be on display from June 5th to August 15th, with its art reception on July 3rd from 5-8pm.

"Piecemeal Landscape" showcases contemporary landscapes formed through observation, memory, and human intervention. Drawn from Southern environments influenced by tourism, urban development and also natural spaces, shifting perspectives of the landscapes are also present within these pieces. Both of McCoy and Rivera’s works consider personal relationships to landscape as something both intimate and constructed. "Piecemeal Landscape" shows cycles of enchantment and disenchantment incorporated within the works, revealing how ideas of landscape are curated and consumed. Unstable perspectives in Rivera’s and McCoy’s works navigate their own surroundings with extra awareness into how perception, time, and cultural framing shape what we see.

Sam McCoy and Chris Rivera both are currently professors at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky. Both Sam McCoy and Chris Rivera earned their BFA’s at University of Central Florida and their MFA’s at Florida State University. Both artists create pieces that focus on the interactions between natural and constructed landscapes. Sam's inspiration comes from the roadside attractions and tourist spectacles that populate Florida. Her work pulls back the metaphorical curtain on Florida's carefully crafted image compared to her own personal experiences. Chris Rivera showcases the interactions between landscapes and urban environments through his modular pieces that inspire from principles of perspective, observation, and time. His work is essentially a dialogue between the past and present alongside the natural and constructed. His work provides a new perspective on how we as humans interact with our environments.

"Piecemeal Landscape" will be on display from June 5th to August 15th. Its opening will be on July 3rd from 5-8pm. Venvi Art Gallery is located at 2901 E Park Ave Unit 2800 Tallahassee, FL 32301. To learn more about this exhibition and both Sam McCoy and Chris Rivera’s work, please visit www.venviartgallery.com.

  • Midtown Reader invites you to hear Li Zhuang, recent graduate of FSU's Creative Writing PhD program, to discuss her passionate book of poems, But Octopi Don't Sing, with FSU Professor James Kimbrell.

    ABOUT THE BOOK
Li Zhuang’s But Octopi Don’t Sing are poems of self-discovery and, at times, self-defense, but they are also poems of passion, understanding, and hard-won love. Rarely do we encounter a collection with as much energy combined with as much precision, with as much formal inventiveness combined with such vulnerability, as when she asks her titular, three-hearted octopus, “How many hearts do you need / to hold your endless grief?” Her voice is distinctive and her aim true. Zhuang’s But Octopi Don’t Sing is a remarkable debut and marks the arrival of an exciting new poet

——James Kimbrell Author of The Law of Truly Large Numbers: Poems
