Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin opens the program with refined charm and delicate French color, paying homage to the grace of 18th-century dance through a lens of modern impressionism. Both Mozart and Mendelssohn died before the age of 40, leaving us with prolific and profound bodies of work. Their pieces on this program showcase the composers’ immense talents, leaving one to wonder what might have been. This concert features another prodigy, violinist Amaryn Olmeda, performing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, a Romantic masterpiece that never fails to captivate. The evening culminates with Mozart’s majestic Symphony No. 41 in C, aptly nicknamed “Jupiter” after the Roman god, a triumphant and awe-inspiring finale from the greatest of Classical symphonists.

Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit about Operation Paperclip. This exhibit will open on Tuesday, October 7 and be on display through Saturday, November 1. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission, but donations are gladly accepted.

Operation Paperclip was the secret US campaign to move German scientists, some of whom had Nazi records of wrongdoing, to the US to help develop the rocket technology for defense and eventually space exploration. Keeping these human assets out of the hands of the Soviet Union as the Cold War ramped up required turning a blind eye to their pasts as operatives in the Nazi Regime. These scientists, led by Werner Von Braun, were key to the success of the US missions into space.

This exhibit is a cooperative venture between the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum and the Challenger Learning Center in Tallahassee. The Challenger Learning Center is the K-12 Outreach Facility for the Florida A&M University-Florida State University College of Engineering. Portions of this exhibit will be presented in November at the Challenger Learning Center located at 200 S. Duval Street in Tallahassee.

Outrageous fashion, high-seas humor, and a tidal wave of creativity will make a splash at an unique showing of Joan Matey’s Fishy Fashion costumes, as a special three month installation. Presented by local artist Joan Matey and the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (ANERR), the fun kicks off Tuesday, September 30, with a Grand Opening at 5:30 pm and the live Fishy Fashion Show at 6 pm, at the ANERR Nature Center, 108 Island Drive in Eastpoint, FL, at the foot of the St. George Island Bridge. The exhibit will be on display through December 31, 2025 and admission is free.

Since 2006, Fishy Fashions have dazzled audiences along the Forgotten Coast, blending pageantry and parody with jaw-dropping costumes made entirely from maritime cast-offs. This wildly imaginative and eco-conscious Fishy Fashion Exhibit will feature an unforgettable lineup of cleverly crafted coastal couture, made from flotsam, jetsam, and repurposed shoreline cast-offs. Attendees can see these one-of-a-kind ensembles up close, each designed using discarded ship sails, beach umbrellas, oyster sacks, sea nets, sponges, and other debris washed ashore. With nearly two decades of experience in crafting “Nautical Nonsense,” Joan brings humor and ingenuity to her work, demonstrating the beauty and potential of reclaimed materials through her intricate, nautical-themed designs.

On display will be several colorful, quirky characters’ costumes, like the intimidating Red Tide She-Devil, the brave St. George the Lionfish Slayer, the mysterious Beach Banditto, the rowdy Sea Vamp, the heroic Legionnaire de Mer, and royals Marine Antoinette and the Duchess of Dog Island. These costumes are made with insane detail, such as sponge busby helmets, belts of painted olive shells, and jackets adorned with medals crafted from old beach chair webbing.

For the Grand Opening on September 30, the ANERR staff will hit the runway in a fashion show, highlighting costumes that reflect today’s coastal challenges, like plastic infiltration and microplastics, while students from Franklin County Schools will also contribute sculptures and fashion accessories created from repurposed materials. Together, the exhibit blends art and science to raise awareness about marine debris and celebrate creative solutions.

A graduate of Florida State University’s Art Department, Joan first conceived the idea nearly 20 years ago inspired by various "trash fashion" shows that made statements about recycling. Since then, her Fishy Fashion characters have become crowd favorites at events across the Forgotten Coast, including the Apalachicola Mardi Gras Barkus Parade and the Carrabelle Culture Crawl. Lantern Fest will be celebrated on Saturday, November 8, 2025 from 6-10 pm ET at Crooked River Lighthouse Park, 1975 Hwy 98 W, Carrabelle, FL. This unique, outdoor festival, best known for its awesome display of over a hundred colorful, hanging lanterns, lights up the night with magic and history at the 1895 maritime landmark. Special activities include amazing music and Bluegrass harmonies by the Bottom Dollar Boys and spectacular glow-in-the-dark performances from the Tallahassee State College Dance Company. Festival-goers can also enjoy special evening tower climbs, ancient craft demonstrations, enchanting glowing lantern displays, museum exhibits, and delicious food and desserts.

Crooked River Lighthouse is excited to announce the return of the remarkably gifted and entertaining musical group, the Bottom Dollar Boys. This group has been delighting audiences for over 40 years, with traditional Bluegrass harmonies and mighty fine pickin’. They’ve been toilin’ in the fields of Bluegrass, Old Country, Gospel, Americana with a pinch of Blues. Now they will be performing their energetic tunes under the glow of over a hundred hanging lanterns. In addition, the talented Tallahassee State College Dance Company will dazzle guests with their superb choreography, amazing talent and imaginative use of glow-in-the-dark props and illusions.

Over a hundred colorful, hanging lanterns will be on display throughout the grounds of the lighthouse park. Many of these lanterns are truly works of art and have been painstakingly hand-made by the incredible Joan Matey and other gifted local artists. John Pfund and Chris Cauthen will set up the blacksmith forge and Ken Horne will weave rope from local plant fibers as the two ancient crafts demonstrations. Delicious food will be available for purchase from a couple of food trucks and desserts from the Beacon Bistro. Plus guests will enjoy keeper’s tales, lighthouse museum and gift shop, Fresnel lens exhibit, wandering Lantern Ladies and the Giant Moth.

All are invited to come revel in this unique birthday party as the Crooked River Lighthouse turns 130 years old with music, dance, night tower climbs, glowing lanterns and yummy food. Advance tickets are recommended. Tickets, for those 13 and up, are $15 in advance and $20 at the gate. Admission is free for kids 12 and under.
