The Crooked River Lighthouse will host a relaxed and enjoyable evening on Tuesday, June 10 from 6:00 to 10:00 pm ET in Carrabelle, FL under the glow of the setting sun and rising Strawberry Moon. Festivities include a networking social with the Carrabelle Chamber of Commerce, plus after-hour museum tours, and evening tower climbs.

The evening kicks off with a Social Mixer co-hosted by the Carrabelle Chamber of Commerce and the Carrabelle Lighthouse Association from 6:00 to 7:00 PM at the Pirate Ship. In celebration of the Strawberry Moon, guests can enjoy strawberries and cream and light refreshments while connecting with fellow members, local leaders, and community supporters. It’s a valuable chance to network and build relationships that support the community, local businesses, and organizations. At the mixer, Nicole Lamar, Senior Business Relations Representative from Florida’s Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (VR), will highlight services available locally. VR provides services to both local businesses and to individuals with disabilities by helping them find and maintain employment, while offering businesses access to a skilled workforce, training support, and recruitment assistance.

From 7:00 - 10:00 pm, visitors can experience an after-hours tour of the Keeper’s House Museum and see the exhibit of the lighthouse’s original, historic Fresnel lens constructed in 1894 in Paris, France at this Moonlit Evening event. Guests can browse the unique nautical gifts and souvenirs in the gift shop.

Those who wish to climb the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast can take part in evening tower climbs. From the top, climbers will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach under the colors of the sunset and rising moon. Evening climbs are $10 and scheduled at 15-minute intervals throughout the event. Due to limited space, reservations are strongly encouraged. Climbers must be at least 44 inches tall. The Carrabelle History Museum is excited to announce the extension of its nostalgic exhibit, “Vintage Office – Relics from City Hall’s Past,” now on display through Sunday, June 29. The exhibit offers visitors a glimpse into the workings of Carrabelle’s city government in decades past. Step into the office of yesteryear and explore a collection of authentic artifacts used by city officials to keep the town running smoothly. The Carrabelle History Museum is open Wednesday from 12 to 5 pm ET, Thursday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm ET, and Sunday from 12 to 5 pm ET. Admission is free, with donations gratefully accepted.

Among the artifacts highlighted are historic city log books, a municipal court log from the 1940s—complete with charges like fighting and disorderly conduct, original City of Carrabelle ballot boxes and paper ballots once used in local elections, a classic 1953 Underwood Standard Typewriter used by Assistant City Clerk Mary Mathes, a vintage mechanical adding machine, and the black ledger from longtime City Clerk Charles Lee Daniels, who faithfully served Carrabelle for 34 years. These intriguing pieces tell the story of the city’s administrative past and provide a tangible connection to Carrabelle’s civic heritage.

Need a way to beat the summer heat while supporting a good cause? Apalachicola Riverkeeper is hosting their annual Ice-Cream Social Sunday, June 1st from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at the Maclay Gardens State Park Gardener’s Cottage. Created by volunteers in 2013, this warm weather tradition includes live music and dancing from the Hot Pepper Steppers and Runaway Biscuits and a flavorful assortment of ice cream and toppings provided by board members and volunteers of Apalachicola Riverkeeper. There is also a raffle for a Trek Dual Sport bicycle! A $10 donation is suggested at the door.

One purpose of the Social is to introduce the 2025 Apalachicola RiverTrek team. This year’s awareness-raising kayak trip on the entire Apalachicola River will be from October 29 thru November 2nd and several local residents are participating. At the Social, Riverkeeper Cameron Baxley will also provide a brief update about the state of the river and bay to attendees. Apalachicola Riverkeeper recently won a hard fought administrative hearing against proposed oil drilling in the basin, but there is more to be done.

“Visiting with Tallahassee area supporters in this beautiful state park while sharing ice cream and entertainment is a splendid way to spend an afternoon,” says Baxley. “If you love the Apalachicola River and Bay and all that it represents, please come on out!”

Everglades National Park opened in 1947 after years of hard work to preserve the unique Florida ecosystem. Explore how plants and water work to create the iconic river of grass and meet the people and animals that call this place home. Children will decorate an artistic landscape with colors and natural features of the Florida Everglades.

Learn how historic buildings are adapted to serve new purposes. We will explore the history of the Union Bank building, and the many different businesses that have existed in the bank building over the years. Children will pitch their own idea for a business in the Union Bank building and illustrate their design for the historic space.

Join us to celebrate National Historic Preservation Month and learn about historic Torreya State Park and its Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) connection. The park’s historic Gregory House–one of the state’s earliest historic preservation projects–stands as a testament to the work of Black CCC companies in Florida. Andrew Waber, Historian with the Bureau of Historic Preservation, will discuss his work updating the historic designation of the state park.
