We have an exciting event for you! The Big Bend Model Railroad Association is celebrating its 34th Annual Tallahassee Model Railroad Show and Sale with a 2-day event!

The event will take place on Saturday June 28, 2025 9 am - 5 pm and Sunday June 29, 2025 9 am - 3 pm at the North Florida Fairgrounds, Buildings 2 & 4, 441 Paul Russell Road, Tallahassee, FL 32301 located at the corner of Paul Russell Road and South Monroe Street.

We anticipate having about 40 vendors utilizing 150+ tables for displaying new and used items for sale ranging from the tiny "Z" to the large "G" scale. Products from LGB, Aristocraft, Lionel, American Flyer, Atlas, Kato, Walthers, Broadway Limited, Bachmann, Con-Cor, Life-Like, Micro Trains and much more will be available bringing you the very best the area has to offer in model railroading and accessories.

This year the show will feature T-Trak layouts in “N”, “HO” and “O-27” scales and also with LEGO trains, Thomas the Train and the BBMRA’s switching layout for public operations.

The various BBMRA Division railroaders have been busy building and upgrading their layouts by adding animation and enhanced technologies for better operations. It's a family-friendly setting and there’ll be some things you’ve never seen or heard before from our model railroaders.
Experts on model train layout design, equipment, construction, landscaping, and technology will be on hand along with vendors featuring a wide range of trains and other model railroad items and apparel.

Everything is inside the air-conditioned buildings (including areas for you to “sit and eat” or just “rest your feet”). Food will be available for purchase on the premises. On-site Parking is Free.

The Apalachicola Area Historical Society (AAHS) is hosting a program, “In Celebration of Debe Beard and Oyster Radio’s “Glance at the Past”, about Historian, Botanist, Community Leader and Bibliophile, Debe Beard as part of their Spring Speaker Series. The event is on Tuesday, May 13, at 5:00 pm ET at the Raney Carriage House, 126 Market Street, Apalachicola, FL.

Debe Beard was a well-known figure in the Apalachicola community with many abilities and interests - historian, botanist, community leader, and passionate bibliophile - whose contributions touched many aspects of Apalachicola’s cultural life. Known for her deep knowledge of history, Debe captured the spirit of the region and beyond in her long-running radio segment, Glance at the Past, which aired on Oyster Radio. These memorable radio broadcasts brought history to life and offered listeners a broad exploration of topics, with an emphasis on local history and culture. Even after she no longer worked at the station, her voice and knowledge remained a cherished part of the community’s collective memory.

In addition to her work in local history, Debe had an interest in historic architecture. She was a speaker at the Passion for Preservation Symposium sharing her knowledge about the historical development of the town and its iconic wood-framed vernacular architecture, commonly referred to as "The Cracker House". This highlighted two of her favorite topics - Apalachicola history and old house construction.

A Master Gardener affiliated with the University of Florida, Debe also brought her botanical knowledge to the beautiful Chapman Botanical Gardens, a place she held dear. Her passion for the Gardens continues to bear fruit even now after her passing. Her desire was to promote the Botanical Gardens in Apalachicola and create a larger and more diverse variety of flowers along with outdoor art by local artists. Her family and community are carrying that idea forward, with donations being made through GoFundMe to help bring her vision to life. Whether through her work as a librarian, her gardening expertise, or her preservation efforts, Debe Beard’s legacy is one of deep care, curiosity, and commitment to her community and its stories.

These Speakers events are part of a well-established, popular series by the Apalachicola Area Historical Society. Local and tourist history enthusiasts have gathered for these informative talks for a number of years. Seating is limited so come early to get a spot. The Carrabelle History Museum is pleased to share a special display, “Vintage Office - Relics from City Hall's Past”. This display is open now through Sunday, June 1. This unique exhibit offers a nostalgic look into the daily workings of Carrabelle’s city government and the tools that helped keep the city running. Visitors can explore the exhibit at the Carrabelle History Museum on Wednesdays from 12 to 5 pm ET, Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm ET, and Sundays from 12 to 5 pm ET. Admission is free, with donations warmly welcomed.

Step back in time and explore original artifacts from Carrabelle’s historic City Hall office. This fascinating display features an authentic 1953 Underwood Standard Typewriter used by the Assistant City Clerk Mary Mathes, a mechanical adding machine, official city log books, a municipal court log from the 1940s (showing lots of charges of fighting and disorderly conduct), and a small black book belonging to City Clerk Charles Lee Daniels. Visitors can also see vintage receipt books, the original city seal stamp, and an assortment of rubber stamps once used for municipal business—each item offering a tangible link to Carrabelle’s mid-20th century administration.

Typewriters revolutionized record keeping. Before their widespread use, government staff painstakingly hand wrote every record. The introduction of typewriters marked a new era of efficiency and organization in municipal operations.

Whether you're a history buff, longtime local, or curious visitor, this special exhibit brings to life the everyday workings of Carrabelle’s past and celebrates the people and processes behind the paperwork.

Tranquility for Uncertain Times, paintings by Steve Andrews will be the next exhibit at Jefferson Arts. The show begins Saturday, May 3 and continues thru May 31, 2025. Please join us for refreshments from 12N until 4p on Saturday May 3 and see what other wonderful paintings will be on exhibit.

Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting an exhibit on the Liberation of Paris during World War II. This exhibit will open on Tuesday, May 6 and be on display at the museum until Saturday, May 31. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission, but donations are gladly accepted.

The exhibit will present the military and civilian efforts that led to the liberation of Paris on August 25, 1944, after four years of German occupation. The liberation was a turning point in World War II, involving the strategic efforts of the Allied Forces, Free French forces, and the French Resistance. As Allied troops advanced through France following the D-Day invasion, the citizens of Paris, led by resistance fighters, initiated an uprising against the occupying German forces. The Allies initially did not consider Paris to be a priority at first, but the push by the French, who felt the need for this symbolic city to be cleared of Germans, changed their mind.

Supreme Allied Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered the intervention of the Free French 2nd Armored Division, led by General Philippe Leclerc, alongside the U.S. 4th Infantry Division. After intense fighting and the strategic surrender of German forces under General Dietrich von Choltitz, Paris was officially freed on August 25, 1944.

The exhibit features compelling historical photographs and firsthand accounts from soldiers in the U.S. 4th Infantry Division - one of the first American units to enter Paris. Known as the “Ivy Division,” the 4th played a crucial role in the D-Day landings at Utah Beach and the subsequent campaign across Nazi-occupied France. Their dramatic entry into Paris along with the French 2nd Armored Division marked a defining moment in the war. The 4th Infantry were trained in amphibious assault at Camp Gordon Johnston. This preparation proved vital throughout their combat operations.

Visitors to the exhibit will gain insight into the soldiers’ experiences and the broader significance of their actions, from their training at Camp Gordon Johnston to their role in liberating one of Europe’s most iconic cities.

Wiley Gaby and Ever More Nest Bring Heart and New Songs to Tallahassee — May 8 at House of Music
TALLAHASSEE, FL — On Wednesday, May 8, two rising Americana songwriters with deep Southern roots — Wiley Gaby and Ever More Nest — will take the stage at House of Music in Tallahassee for a night of new music, pedal steel, and lived-in stories.

Brooklyn-based, Wakulla-raised, and a graduate of Florida State University, Gaby is debuting a full set of brand-new songs for his hometown crowd, joined by Gainesville’s Sam Holcomb on pedal steel. Wiley is fresh from a four-day session at Dial Back Sound in Mississippi, the studio and label run by Matt Patton (Drive-By Truckers). Gaby’s next project — a new solo debut EP this fall, followed by a full LP on vinyl in early 2026 — will be his first with the label.

Sharing the bill is New Orlean’s Ever More Nest, the moniker of New Orleans songwriter Kelcy Wilburn, whose music carries echoes of the Mississippi River, gospel halls, and roadside dives. Ever More Nest’s debut album, The Place That You Call Home (2018) garnered praise from local, national, and international media. The album was nominated for Best Alt-Country Album in the 2019 Independent Music Awards and named to Offbeat Magazine's list of Top 50 Albums of 2018.

Out Here Now, the follow-up to Ever More Nest's lauded debut, was released on August 19, 2022 with its single “What's Gone Is Gone” reaching #1 on the Roots Music Radio Contemporary Folk Songs Chart.

DID YOU KNOW????? Not one, not two, but THREE of our local bowling youth have qualified for the Junior Olympics tryouts (Junior Gold) in Green Bay, WI and WE NEED HELP FROM OUR COMMUNITY. We are hosting two fundraisers to help the families field the expenses for the 10-day tryouts. On May 4th and June 29th, between 6 PM and 8 PM, Capital Lanes is hosting "Fun For a Cause." Up to 6 people can bowl unlimited games in 2 hours for only $50, including shoes, a large popcorn and pitcher of soda. Proceeds will support the 3 young men, ages 15 to 18, in their quest to join the Junior U.S. Olympic bowling team.

We are so proud Tallahassee is being represented so well by these 3 young men. Hope you can help us get people out to support them. You can see them all bowl on Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. in the USBC Youth League at Capital Lanes.
