Venvi Art Gallery is delighted to showcase "Canopy Oaks, Embroiderers’ Guild of America (EGA): Original Art and Fine Craft", a group exhibition of works by members of the organization Embroiderers’ Guild of America. Varying types of needlework incorporating various designs and techniques will be featured in this exhibition. "Canopy Oaks, Embroiderers’ Guild of America (EGA): Original Art and Fine Craft" will be on display from February 7th to March 16th, with its art reception on March 7th from 5-8pm.

"Canopy Oaks, Embroiderers’ Guild of America (EGA): Original Art and Fine Craft" showcases over 30 embroidery and needlework pieces by numerous members of the organization. Each piece is handcrafted and has intricate detail. Canopy Oaks, Embroiderers’ Guild of America (EGA): Original Art and Fine Craft intends to showcase and educate anyone who views the pieces about the art and craft of embroidery, alongside celebrating its heritage and use in the community. According to Pam Doffek, a chapter member, EGA is “deeply dedicated to the study, preservation, and promotion of needle arts… Like any other artwork, it needs to be shown and shared, eliciting all the feelings and emotions of any art, 2-D, or 3-D.”

EGA is a nonprofit organization that was formed in 1958 as a branch to the organization Embroiderers’ Guild of London. It withdrew and became its own organization in 1970. EGA’s mission is to inspire passion for needlework and other similar arts via cooperating and sharing ideas with like-minded individuals by promoting a high standard of embroidery techniques and designs. Each chapter is dedicated to using embroidery to benefit their communities. EGA holds a juried exhibit called Through the Needle’s Eye annually in its headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky. Members of EGA are able to submit their own works to be displayed in this showcase.

When & Where:
All Open Mahjong games take place every Wednesday at 12:30PM at Hearth & Soul, located at 1410 Market Street, Tallahassee, FL. Our store hours are Monday-Saturday, 10:00AM–6:00AM, and Sundays from 12:00PM–5:00PM.

How It Works:
This is a free event, but reservations are required. Simply call us at (850)-894-7685 to secure your spot. A minimum of four players is needed to start a game, so if you’re flying solo or short on players, we’ll add you to a waiting list until more participants join.

Don’t have your own Mahjong tiles or card? No worries! While we encourage you to bring your own, we also have Mahjong supplies available for purchase in-store. Whether you’re here for the camaraderie, the strategy, or just the joy of the game, we can’t wait to welcome you to Hearth & Soul for an afternoon of fun and friendly competition. The privately-owned preserve, a magnificent longleaf/slash pine savannah is rich with rare plants and rare habitats. Home to 20+ known species of federally or state listed plants including some carnivorous varieties, as well as common delights! We will see many of them. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and join the Friends of Maclay Gardens for a celebration of the Maclay family's Scottish heritage on world Tartan Day! At the event, we'll be revealing the tartan flag and banner of the Maclay family and fly them for the first time at the park. Our friends at the St. Andrew Society of Tallahassee and Tallahassee Pipes are helping to make this a memorable day with traditional Scottish tartan ceremony elements and live bagpipe musicians. Don't forget to wear your plaid!

Regular park admission fees apply ($6/vehicle), but garden entry fees are waived during the event.

Join us Friday, February 28th for a fun community contra dance! Tallahassee’s terrific Drew Thomas will be calling the dances to the live tunes of Wild Bill’s Traveling Circus.

Tallahassee community contra dances have resumed in the Senior Center Ballroom on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month! Contra dancing is an upbeat, beginner-friendly American folk dance for all ages. It shares many moves with square dancing (such as swing your partner and do-si-do) and is danced in long lines to live music. The bands and callers vary each night. Come alone or bring friends–no partner or experience required. Those new to contra dancing are strongly encouraged to come by 7:15 when a Beginner Lesson will be taught, and as dances are taught in more detail early in the evening. Wear comfortable clothes and flat shoes.
