The Crooked River Lighthouse in partnership with the Big Bend Filipino-American Association will be offering their very popular lantern-making workshop on Sunday, October 27 from 3:00-6:00 pm at C-Quarters Marina, 501 St. James Avenue (Hwy 98), Carrabelle, FL.

Participants will learn to make a traditional Filipino Parol, a 3D star lantern. This wonderful workshop is being led by Aurora Hansen and members of the Big Bend Filipino-American Association. Note: this workshop requires a bit more artistic skill than the jellyfish lantern workshop. Cost is $10 to cover materials. At the end of the workshop, attendees will go home with their own lovely lantern. Participants are encouraged to bring their glowing creation to the Crooked River Lighthouse for Lantern Fest on Saturday, November 9 from 6-10 pm to add to the awesome display.

Richard Elliott, Principal Organist for The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah, will perform at Trinity on Saturday, October 12, at 6:00 PM. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Richard Elliott holds master’s and doctoral degrees from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. The concert is free and open to all.

FREE open rehearsal for the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra subscription concert Dancing and Dynamite featuring conductor candidate Daniel Black and guest artist Natasha Paremski!

Maestro Daniel Black’s program promises barn-burning energy! Bookending the concert are Jessie Montgomery’s Coincident Dances and Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. Montgomery’s work is inspired by the mosaic of dance music found in New York’s various subcultures, from samba to techno, English consort to mbira; Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony–famously referred to as the “apotheosis of the dance” by Richard Wagner–is infused with driving, dance-like rhythms throughout, especially in the outer movements. The symphony culminates in one of the most explosive finales of the entire repertoire. Between these two works, Rachmaninoff’s brooding and virtuosic Third Piano Concerto packs some serious dynamite, especially as performed by rising star pianist Natasha Paremski.

Lantern Fest will be celebrated on Saturday, November 9, from 6-10 pm ET at Crooked River Lighthouse, 1975 Highway 98 West, Carrabelle, FL. This unique, outdoor festival, known for its display of over a hundred colorful, hanging lanterns, lights up the night with magic and history at the 1895 maritime landmark. Special activities include amazing music by gifted Irish musicians, Killavil, the spectacular glow-in-the-dark performance from the Tallahassee State College Dance Company, and superb, traditional Chinese music performance by Master Zheng Player Dr. Haiqiong Deng and members of the Florida State University Chinese Music Ensemble. Festival-goers can also enjoy evening tower climbs, ancient craft demonstrations, museum exhibits, and delicious food and desserts. Don’t miss this evening of music, dance, glowing lanterns and more.

Crooked River Lighthouse is excited to announce the return of the remarkably gifted Irish music trio Killavil to Lantern Fest. This award-winning group has been a part of the Irish music scene all over the U.S. and abroad. They’ve kept a strong dedication to traditional Irish music and play Irish bouzouki, bodhran, uilleann pipes, tin whistle, flute and fiddle. They will be performing lively Irish tunes under the glow of over a hundred hanging lanterns.

The talented Tallahassee State College Dance Company will dazzle on the outdoor stage with their impressive choreography, amazing talent and glowing props. For over 20 years, TSC Dance Company has nurtured and inspired creative dancers through its admirable outreach program, which brings performances to audiences across the state. Adding to the magic, internationally renowned Master Zheng Player, Dr. Haiqiong Deng, will return to perform alongside the dancers, showcasing her mastery of the 21-string Chinese gu-zheng (zheng), making for a truly enchanting experience.

Joining Haiqiong for a special performance are three members of the FSU Chinese Music Ensemble, Dr. Yin Yang, Safan You and Yueyue Zhu. FSU’s Chinese Music Ensemble is one of the oldest in the States. Directed by Dr. Haiqiong Deng, the ensemble provides a unique platform for FSU students and people from the community to play traditional and folk music from diverse regions in China. In the past two decades, the ensemble has presented at festivals, museums and concert halls around Florida, and has contributed richness to Florida culture. The instruments include the 21-string zheng, a two-string Chinese fiddle called erhu, the Chinese transverse flute called the dizi, and a Chinese hammered dulcimer.

In addition to fabulous performances, over a hundred colorful, hanging lanterns will be on display throughout the grounds of the lighthouse park. Many of these lanterns are truly works of art and have been painstakingly hand-made by the incredible Joan Matey and other gifted local artists. Ancient crafts demonstrators, including blacksmiths, will share their talents. Delicious food will be available for purchase from vendors. The Beacon Bistro will be selling delectable desserts and coffee.

The Friends of the Franklin County Public Libraries (FFCPL) welcome young explorers to embark on an exploration of science, technology, engineering, and math at an upcoming STEM event. This engaging and educational program will take place on Thursday, November 14, at 3:30 PM, at both the Eastpoint and Carrabelle branches. Best of all, this event is completely free and open to the public—no library card is required!

This STEM Space event will feature fun, hands-on activity where participants will build balloon-powered cars and discover how a simple balloon can set their creations in motion. This interactive activity promises to be both fun and educational for all involved.

The STEM Space is designed to inspire curiosity and foster a love for STEM in an interactive and supportive environment. Early exposure to STEM has been closely linked to future academic achievement and career success. By participating in activities that are both fun and educational, children can develop essential skills like critical thinking and problem-solving, setting them up for a bright future. This event is best suited for those ages 8-12 years old.

The Eastpoint Story Time event will feature the children’s book “Balloons over Broadway: the true story of the puppeteer of Macy's Parade” written and illustrated by Melissa Sweet. In this book, award-winning artist Sweet tells the story of the puppeteer Tony Sarg, capturing his genius, his dedication, his zest for play, and his long-lasting gift to America--the inspired helium balloons that would become the trademark of Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. After the book, the young visitors will make themed crafts: DIY Parade Float out of Balloons.

The Story Time programs are filled with engaging storytelling and crafts, providing a time of fun to ignite a love for reading in young minds. The whole family is invited to participate in the activities, which are designed to build pre-reading skills and encourage social interaction in a relaxed atmosphere. This event is best suited for those 2-6 years old.

Venvi Art Gallery is pleased to present “Locales: North Florida’s Plein Air Landscapes” featuring oil paintings by local artist Nan Liu. This exhibition will showcase over 30 of his original paintings. Locales: North Florida’s Plein Air Landscapes will be on display from November 1st to January 18th, 2025. Its opening reception will be held on November 1st from 5-8pm.

“Locales: North Florida’s Plein Air Landscapes” will feature 30 oil paintings by Nan Liu that reflect his experiences in Tallahassee, Florida. “Locales: North Florida’s Plein Air Landscapes” seeks to express the joyous sensations Liu feels from the natural world, especially in the many undisturbed and undestroyed locales. Liu enjoys the rich natural beauty of the lakes, gardens and national parks. The beauty found in the lakes, gardens and national parks Liu paints show the value and diverse beauty that is around us. This beauty is expressed through the landscape paintings in a way that inspires the viewer to feel reawakened and cherish the natural, undisturbed landscape.

Nan Liu works primarily in oil paint. Liu’s passion for art began at a young age, with him studying Chinese Brush painting and calligraphy in Tianjin, China, with his primary influence being contemporary painter Fan Zeng. The overall theme within his works is nature and its presence. Liu’s work showcases the cross-cultural perspective of contemporary America. In the landscape paintings featured in “Locales: North Florida’s Plein Air Landscapes”, Liu intends to showcase the natural beauty of the landscapes surrounding him in such a way that one will cherish the undisturbed landscape.

Nan Liu received his master’s in Art Education from the University of Arkansas in 2001, and his MFA in painting at Florida State University in 2006 where he also received his PhD in Education in 2009. Currently, Liu is a professor of Visual Arts, Humanities and Theatre at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU). His work is also part of public and private collections. Examples include the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Florida State University, and also Florida A&M University (FAMU). For the past two decades, Liu has also displayed his work in numerous group and solo exhibitions.
