Venvi Art Gallery is pleased to present “Subtropical: Living in a Sinking State”, a solo exhibition by artist Sam McCoy. This exhibition will showcase over 30 of her original paintings. “Subtropical: Living in a Sinking State” will be on display from July 5th to August 18th, with its art reception on August 2nd from 5-8pm.

“Subtropical: Living in a Sinking State” showcases over 30 of McCoy’s original paintings, depicting scenes from Florida featuring brightly colored and loosely painted contemporary landscapes. Her works span from paintings she has created “en plein air”, local flora and fauna, and roadside gardens or tourist areas. According to McCoy, Florida is known for its tropical picturesque sunsets, springs, and theme parks. However, the reputation of the state is sometimes a bit shadier. She enjoys thinking about the concept of an “exotic paradise” and how it has influenced today’s culture. She is incredibly grateful for the beautiful landscape she is privileged to live in, but some days she feels an impending sense of doom as climate change affects the state and its landscape.

Sam McCoy is a contemporary painter whose work focuses on the interaction between the natural and hyperreal landscapes of Florida. Her works pull back the metaphorical curtain of the carefully curated image of Florida and its tourist destinations. She depicts many of the flora and fauna found in the state of Florida in her works. As an artist, McCoy is inspired by the vibrant colors used in citrus packing labels, as well as artists like Martin John Heade who paint majestic skies in the Hudson River School style. She also selects bits and pieces of other landscape paintings that capture her attention.

McCoy earned her BFA in Drawing and Painting from the University of Central Florida. She later earned her MFA at Florida State University, where she also briefly was an adjunct instructor in drawing, painting, and design. She also received a Plein Air Winner award from St. Mark’s Wildlife refuge. Currently, McCoy is the Senior Artist Programs Manager and Wildlife Artist at the Thomasville Center for the Arts, where she collaborates with artists and designers in curating their exhibitions to the public.

Due to popular demand! Our first class sold out! Join us for a wonderful morning of painting with artist Suzanna Reese Winton. This class is designed as an introduction to the joys of watercolor painting, but all levels will benefit from Winton’s expert instruction. Winton has been painting in watercolor for 30 years and travels the US leading workshops and artist’s retreats in watercolor and oils. She is the author of "Realistic Watercolor Portraits" and has won countless regional and national awards and accolades for her works.

The focus of this class will be painting native birds and participants will have the choice of painting the beautiful indigo bunting or a stunning woodpecker. Winton will share her special techniques in capturing detail and her extreme talent for creating color recipes using a limited palette resulting in a stunning painting you will be proud to display in your home.

The class is from 9 a.m. to noon and will be held in the Learning Center. The fee is $65 and all supplies for the class will be provided for you. For an additional $10 fee, you will receive a voucher to tour the Main House and view the magnificent wildlife art collection, which includes 33 first edition John James Audubon prints of birds native to this region.

Join us for fun in the Kitchen Garden at Pebble Hill as we take part in the Great Southeast Pollinator Census! Participants will take part in this community science project by selecting a plant from the Kitchen Garden and count the number of pollinators that visit in a 15-minute time frame. Those counts will be recorded and submitted to the University of Georgia Extension sponsored website: www. gsepc.org for future research on pollinators. This is a FREE event that is perfect for adults and children. Guests can tour the Main Grounds by purchasing a grounds tour ticket at the Visitors’ Center.

Join Master beekeeper, Brandon McKenny, of All the Buzz Apiaries for this informative class on the beneficial hobby of beekeeping. Topics of the class will include: honey bee biology, basic beekeeping for beginners, beekeeper tools, and honey bee pests and their management. Everything you need to know to get started in beekeeping!

McKenny is owner of At All the Buzz Apiaries, a small but rapidly growing veteran owned and operated apiary. They provide raw local honey to the surrounding areas and offer a wide range of apiary services including pollination for farmers, hive consulting and management for beekeepers. McKenny also offer hands on training, education and mentorship for new beekeepers and non-beekeepers alike. Honey will be available for purchase at the class.

Big Bend Cares’ fall event, the Tallahassee AIDS Walk, draws hundreds of participants each year. This year’s walk will be held on Thursday, September 12th, 2024, at 6:30pm at the Southwood Nature Trail. We are celebrating the 34th Annual AIDS Walk this year, working alongside partner organizations Neighborhood Medical Center and Bond Community Health Center.

Individual community members, school and university groups, companies, and faith groups can register to walk as individuals or as part of a team beginning Monday, July 22nd. Walkers are encouraged to also become fundraisers themselves and help us reach our goal. After a memorial walk around the Southwood Nature Trail (starting at the intersection of Ivy Green Trail and Grove Park Dr.), we will gather to listen to speakers and music.

This event will be a celebration of all of those who have fought so hard to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS. All proceeds help Big Bend Cares in providing direct-care services for our clients and HIV prevention and education for the entire Big Bend region.

Jerry Lee, Senior Archaeologist with Florida’s Bureau of Archaeological Research, will present the results of the 2022 excavation of a small portion of El Camino Real, or the “royal road,” at Mission San Luis. El Camino Real linked San Luis and other missions of Apalachee Province to the Spanish capital of St. Augustine in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Mr. Lee will also discuss preliminary findings from the most recent excavations of a trash pit at Mission San Luis.

Venvi Art Gallery and Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra are delighted to host the “T is for Tallahassee: The ABC’s of our Musical City” book signing on August 24th from 2-5pm at Venvi Art Gallery. Curated by Amanda Kaorith Thompson and edited by Mary Ann Lindley, this bookshowcases the works of twenty-six artists in the Tallahassee area.

“T is for Tallahassee: The ABC’s of our Musical City” depicts a unique piece of Tallahassee’s history, local venues, iconic figures and events. Each page represents one of the 26 letters in the alphabet, while showcasing artwork created by one of twenty-six local artists. Venvi Art Gallery will showcase other works by many of the artists featured during the signing, where the book will also be available for purchase. It will be curated by Rachel Smith, Venvi Art Gallery’s manager.
