Capital Report: March 16, 2023

Republican lawmakers are pushing a bill that would further restrict abortion access. Regan McCarthy reports a proposed ban on most abortions after 6 weeks of pregnancy cleared its first committee hurdle Thursday. Language in the bill stipulates it will go into effect after the state supreme court rules in favor of Florida’s current 15 week ban.

Florida House Republicans are backing legislation to lower the minimum age to buy a long gun from 21 to 18. But the proposal is unlikely to get taken up in the Senate, as Valerie Crowder reports…

A revamped cost estimate to create what’s called “universal choice” for Florida’s school voucher program has put the bill at $646 million. That’s 430 million dollars more than what the Florida House originally estimated, but below the $4 billion dollar figure proposed by an independent group. Lynn Hatter reports, the newest estimate falls much more in line with the figures seen in other states with similar programs.

Tom Flanigan reports a Florida House panel is proposing to do away with the requirement that a jury recommendation for the death penalty be unanimous.
