A bill to ban most abortions after 15 weeks is moving steadily forward in the Florida House. That comes even as reproductive rights advocates and the bill’s sponsors agree, the measure is on a collision course with a privacy clause in the state’s constitution. Regan McCarthy has the latest.

As Florida lawmakers continue working out how the state’s electoral maps will look over the next decade, one element that’s been missing in the process is an opportunity for widespread public input. Unlike in previous redistricting years, no town halls across the state have taken place — neither in-person or virtually. As Valerie Crowder reports, voting rights advocates have pushed for more opportunities for residents to weigh in — but to no avail.

Two bills regarding local ordinances were passed in the Florida Senate on Thursday. Brett Rutherford reports the legislation could have a major impact on local governments.

The Jefferson County School District has submitted its transition plan to the state Department of Education to move its schools back to local control. As Sarah Mueller reports, the district is asking for the same amount of funding the state gave the exiting charter school operator.

A Republican proposal would make changes to public-employee unions in Florida. Under the bill, workers would no longer be allowed to have dues deducted from their paychecks. But the proposal doesn’t apply to ALL public employee unions, and as Gina Jordan reports, the plan is getting a lot of pushback.

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has been running a federal-funded program to provide summertime meals for kids who depend on free and reduced-price school meals. Tom Flanigan reports the program is looking for more sponsors to help get the food to the kids who need it most.
