A Florida Department of Education directive telling school districts they have to offer in-person classes in the fall has sparked widespread confusion and fear. Some districts say it has them caught between a rock and a hard place amidst rising coronavirus infections. And as Lynn Hatter reports, some teachers are in open revolt.

The entire reopening debate goes far beyond schools, it seems. As coronavirus numbers climb, Florida Democrats are pushing a “Step Back for Safety” plan that includes reverting to the state’s phase one reopening rules and pushing back the school start date. More on that from Regan McCarthy.

At some point, simply wearing a mask to help slow the spread of COVID-19 became a furiously debated political issue. And while some municipalities are requiring masks in places where the public gathers, some politicians haven’t gotten the message. It’s been six years since Florida State University law professor Dan Markel (mar-KELL) was killed, shot twice in the head in his own garage. His killer has been convicted, as well as one co-conspirator and another awaits trial.
