Spring 2020 Intern

Victoria is from Orlando, but spent her childhood in San Antonio, Texas and outside the D.C. area. She is currently a junior at Florid State University studying Communications and minoring in Political Science. Before coming to WFSU, Victoria was a staff writer at the FSView and a volunteer at  the campus radio station WVFS. When she’s not at school or writing, Victoria enjoys baking, watching documentaries and playing video games to de-stress.

Recently, conservative activist Charlie Kirk spoke at Florida State University as part of his "Culture War" tour. The event was largely peaceful, a marked difference from three years ago, when former Brietbart columnist Milo Yiannopolos visited the school. Visits to college campuses by conservative activists come as the schools face increasing scrutiny over whether all groups can freely exercise their free speech rights.

Florida law lets people with concealed carry permits carry guns at religious institutions but not in schools. The House Judiciary Committee voted  12-5 Wednesday to allow concealed carry at religious institutions attached to or that share properties with schools--like churches and synagogues.

Sen. Bernie Sanders has apparently dropped a monkey wrench on his potential success in winning over Florida’s Cuban voter bloc. In an interview with Anderson Cooper on “60 Minutes,” Sanders said he saw some redeeming qualities in dictator Fidel Castro’s leadership in Cuba. Some Florida politicos, thought leaders and voters are sounding off.

Businesses could get an extra incentive to hire more interns through a proposal  being heard in Florida’s legislature.  The “Internship Tax Credit Program,” would reward up to $2,000 in tax credits for each intern an employer hires. 

The City of Tallahassee may be getting a bell tower dedicated to fallen veterans. City commissioners voted  Wednesday to contribute money toward the tower’s construction.

Visit Florida is fighting for its existence after last year’s legislative session brought devastating budget cuts to the tourism agency. However, its pleas for survival aren’t swaying one powerful lawmaker- House Speaker Jose Oliva.

Tallahassee’s City Commissioners are planning for the new year. On their agenda, an overarching, five-year plan that focuses on economic development, poverty, infrastructure, public safety, public trust, and quality of life.

Florida’s average teacher salary is among the lowest in the nation. The Florida Education Association says the state suffers from high turn-over rates and teacher shortages. The teachers union wants to change that and Monday, it brought educators from across the state to the Florida Capitol to demand more funding for education.
