Florida’s environment---particularly the Everglades---could be a major topic of discussion in Congress this year. Several Florida Congressmen are partnering on bi-partisan proposals aimed at Everglades restoration.
Freshman Congressman Patrick Murphy, a Democrat who represents South Florida’s House District 18, says he’s hoping to play a role in helping the Environment during his time in Washington.
“It’s a return on investment and something that I’m going to focus on, and I’ve already spoken to a couple Republicans about, one of which is Tom Rooney, a fellow Florida colleague on the Republican side," said Murphy.
"And, we’re coming up with a couple of ideas for some legislation we're going to put forward to help out our districts and to help out the Everglades.”
In recent years, Congressman Rooney has tried and failed to introduce legislation that would ban the import of specific snake breeds, like pythons, which are damaging the Everglades.
Another bipartisan pair, Florida Congressmen Alcee Hastings, a Democrat, and Mario Diaz-Balart, a Republican, recently reintroduced the Congressional Everglades Caucus to educate members on the importance of Everglades-related issues.
