The diary of Anne Frank has reached millions of readers since its publication in 1947. A new exhibit on the life and diary of Frank aims to inspire Leon County students.

A new exhibit at the Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts chronicles the life of a young girl and her family, hiding in a secret annex during World War II. Dozens of local art, English and history teachers gathered Thursday to discuss incorporating Anne Frank’s story into their classrooms. Hilary Eddy Stipelman from the Anne Frank Center in New York organized the teacher training.

“Who am I and where do I fit in this world? And where am I going and why am I here? All of those internal self-crises that we have between age 12 to age 16, that’s the stuff that Anne was trying to figure out,” she said.

Stipelman led teachers through the exhibit, which places excerpts of Frank’s diary within a broader historical perspective. Stipelman says Frank’s story can empower young people.

“I think that’s incredibly important that our students understand and know that what they’re writing is incredibly important and that Anne was their age when she did that,” she said.

The exhibit runs through February 7th.
