Tallahassee's Temple Israel was the scene of a Holocaust remembrance ceremony on Sunday, April 19. The featured speaker for the occasion was Mary Wygodsky, who survived a Nazi death camp while the rest of her family perished.
"I was asked a long time ago if I found the guy - the Nazi - who killed my parents, would I be able to shoot him?" she recalled. "I said, 'No. I would bring him to justice. I'd never shoot him, but I would bring him to justice.'"
Wygodsky worried her people remain the target of murderous hatred today, much of it directed at the nation of Israel.
"You know, Jews are very forgiving," she said. "But we now have so many problems in Israel and it's so very unfortunate. The development of the whole situation should have been avoided."
Also honored during the ceremony were eighteen area school children who created essays and artwork about the Holocaust. The event was hosted by HERC, the Holocaust Education Resource Council.
