The Rattlers welcomed James Colzie III as head football coach during a ceremony Monday at Bragg Memorial Stadium. Colzie started at FAMU as an assistant coach in 2022.

On Monday, the Florida A&M Rattlers welcomed James Colzie III as FAMU's next head football coach. The ceremony was held at Bragg Memorial Stadium and it lasted more than an hour.

It allowed fans, players, and boosters to get to know the new coach, as FAMU Athletic Director Tiffani Dawn Sykes introduced the school’s next head coach.

“Coach Colzie is now forever a part of the rich legacy of FAMU football head coaching greats," said Sykes. "It is my honor to introduce our 19th full-time head football coach, James Colzie III.”

Before taking the head coaching job, Colzie served as interim for the Rattlers. He succeeds Willie Simmons, who’s now an assistant coach at Duke University.

Colzie, originally from Miami, started his playing career in Tallahassee at Florida State University. He won a national title with the Noles in 1993 and would later go into coaching. Before joining FAMU in 2022, Colzie was the head coach at Saint Mary University in Canada. Colzie finished his speech by thanking his new family of players for their commitment.

“I challenged them to not worry about the outside noise," said Colzie. "I challenged them to make sure we did a great job in the weight room, start off well academically, and hold each other accountable. Up to this point, they've done a great job."
