County Commissioners approved the name change in February 2022.

The Gadsden County Co-operative Extension Service facility has been renamed in honor of former U.S. Congressman Alfred J. Lawson Jr.

The renaming ceremony was held on Wednesday, June 19, in Quincy at the County Co-operative Extension Service facility.

“We’ve done a lot of stuff over here during my 34 years in politics," Lawson said at Wednesday's renaming ceremony. "This is really good feeling to see the community come out on Juneteenth and show all of their support."

The longtime state and local official, is a Gadsden native who represented the county and the region, as its state representative, state senator, and Congressman in Florida’s 5th Congressional District.

While in Congress, Lawson helped secure $2.2 million in funding assistance from the State of Florida and a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to help develop the county’s Co-operative Extension Service facility in Quincy.

The now Alfred J. Lawson Jr. Building, will house a farmer’s market and provide agricultural resources.
