Florida’s insurance regulator is readying another push for assignment of benefits reform in next year’s legislative session.  Similar measures have failed since 2013.

Florida’s insurance officials are considering moves to rein in assignments after the Legislature again failed to take action.  The procedure allows service providers to work directly with an insurer, but some say they’re taking advantage of the system.

Florida Insurance Commissioner David Altmaier said insurance companies shouldn’t have to pay attorney fees when contractors sue them over property damage claims. He warned lawmakers this week that if the state doesn’t change its insurance rules, insurance companies will leave the market or raise rates.

While Hurricane Matthew didn’t hit the state as hard as some had feared, it left plenty of damage in its wake. More than 39,000 Florida residents have filed insurance claims—mostly due to property damage—and that number is expected rise.

Rising workers compensation rates could strain Florida businesses—especially in hands on industries.  And the increase will likely test loyalties in the state Legislature.

Workers comp rates are set to rise by almost 15 percent.  State regulators have approved the increase for new and renewal policies starting in December.

Florida’s insurance regulators are considering two major rate increases.  The moves would raise rates for workers compensation insurance and property insurance with the state-backed company Citizens.

In a hastily arranged meeting Friday morning, Florida’s Cabinet members interviewed three more insurance commissioner candidates, promoting deputy commissioner David Altmaier.  In the two previous hearings, the governor and CFO have clashed over nominees.
