One of Tallahassee's longest-serving church pastors now has a street named in his honor. New signs designating the thoroughfare in honor of the Reverend R.B. Holmes and his wife, Dr. Gloria Price Holmes went up on October 29.
Before the sign mounting, Tallahassee City Commissioner and Mayor Pro-Tem Curtis Richardson told the crowd of well-wishers at Holmes' Bethel Missionary Baptist Church how it all came to be.
"It was on September 9th in a unanimous vote of the Tallahassee City Commission that we made today possible; naming a portion of Virginia Street after this wonderful couple that has done so much."
Pastor and Mrs. Holmes came to Tallahassee 40 years ago. He was named pastor of the historic church once led by the legendary C.K.Steele for whom a part of Orange Avenue is now named. Holmes, visibly touched by the honor, spoke barely above a whisper.
"I love Tallahassee. I love the people of Tallahassee. And I love the members of Bethel Church."
A lifelong advocate for social justice and community betterment, Holmes says he'll redouble his campaign to curb youthful gun violence in the wake of the recent shooting on Perry Street.
