Former Tallahassee Mayor and 2018 Democratic candidate for Florida governor, Andrew Gillum, was arrested in Alabama last week.
Baldwin County jail records show that Gillum was arrested on July 2. and released the next day. He was charged with possession of dangerous drugs, marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Of the three charges, the possession of dangerous drugs is a felony. The other two charges—marijuana possession and drug paraphernalia, are misdemeanors.
According to a news release, one of the officers saw a glass pipe in Gillum’s vehicle. That led to a search of his card and subsequent arrest.
Gillum served as Tallahassee's mayor from 2014 to 2018 before launching his campaign for governor. He narrowly lost the election to Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.
This isn't the first time Gillum has faced public scrutiny. In 2020, he entered rehab after he was found in a Miami Beach hotel room during a suspected drug overdose investigation. In that case, he was not charged. He also faced campaign finance charges in 2022. He was found not guilty on one charge, and prosecutors later dropped the others after a jury couldn't reach a decision.
