This year's hurricane season is officially underway. But Leon County Commission Chair Christian Caban said it was the tornadoes of spring, 2024 that led to the creation of a new local effort for disaster relief.

"Within a week, Leon County launched 'Team Leon,' an emergency assistance program that provided financial relief to hundreds of impacted residents and dozens of small businesses. It was the first program created of its kind by local government in the state of Florida."

On Monday, June 1, city, county and other community partners met the media at the Public Safety Complex to stress the importance of being ready before bad weather strikes. To help residents be ready for whatever comes, Mayor John Dailey said local governments are assisting that process.

"To support this, the City of Tallahassee offers the free Neighborhood Prep Tool Kit, available for download at: talgov.com/prep. This year our neighborhood affairs division is again hosting prep workshops in local neighborhoods."

Dailey said the next workshop happens June 16th at St. Peter's Anglican Cathedral on Thomasville Road.
