They're called the "Li'l Mozarts." They are elementary and middle school kids who are well on the way to mastering the violin, viola and cello. On Tuesday, May 12, the various school ensembles were wowing their parents - and even their teachers - during a concert at Fairview Middle School. Lead Teaching Artist Allyson Royal says it's a youth outreach of the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra.

"It began with Sabal Palm Elementary 4 years ago and in these last 4 years it's expanded to Fairview Middle School, Nims Middle School, and Pineview Elementary. Our program started with about 15 students and now we've grown to 60."

The concert material ranged from traditional pieces, such as "Buckey Salute" and "Boil 'em Cabbage Down," to more challenging compositions, including Richard Myer's "Dragon Hunter" and "Dark Currents" by Randall Standridge. No matter the complexity, Royal says the kids always tackle the tunes with enthusiasm.

"They want to do well! They realize that this opportunity is a special one and unique one because without these programs, there wouldn't be anything on the south side of town. And they know that I expect excellence. I am very fortunate to have students that have not only met that challenge but have surpassed it."

Royal says one unmet goal is to eventually expand the string program into the high school level.
