Burned out tree in the Apalachicola Bluffs and Ravines Preserve near Bristol, Florida

Alum Bluff towers over the Apalachicola River, and it’s layered with fossils. Each layer holds stories about the history of north Florida.

Alum Bluff is the western boundary of a biodiversity hotspot, and it's the topic of today's Speaking Of.

Our sister podcast Coast to Canopy returns, hosted by Rob Diaz de Villegas.

He's joined by Harley Means, Florida’s State Geologist and the Director of the Florida Geological Survey; Roger Portell, Invertebrate Paleontology Collection Director at the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville; and Bruce Means, former director of Tall Timbers Research Station and founder of the Coastal Plains Institute.

They discuss fossil collecting, finding shark teeth on Alum Bluff following its designation as Florida's first Invertebrate Paleontological Site, and much more.
