The Capital City was spared any major storm damage last year, but some previous years weren't so serene.

The start of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season is less than a month away. The City of Tallahassee was hosting a storm preparedness workshop at the Sue McCollum Community Center at Lafayette Park on Tuesday. The purpose was to give nearly 30 neighborhood leaders instruction in how to help their neighbors get ready for whatever comes. Among the presenters was Tallahassee National Weather Service Meteorologist Mark Wool.

"We had a quiet season last year so we worry about people taking a step back from preparedness. We don't want that. All it takes is one system to affect your part of the state and it's a busy season for you."

Tallahassee Police Officer John Sabo was another presenter. He said making sure people are safe and no one is using a disaster as a cover for crime are TPD's priorities.

"The department will be out here working 24-7. We don't take time off, whether it's nighttime, daytime, officers will be out on the street patrolling actively trying to make sure that those types of incidents do not happen in our city of Tallahassee."

Other resources on hand were people from the Tallahassee Fire Department, the City's electric utility forester, and Legal Services of North Florida. The next free storm preparation workshop happens next Tuesday, May 12th at ALARM International Church on West Tharpe Street, starting at 6 p.m.
