What is now a vacant lot in a once vibrant South Tallahassee neighborhood is getting a reboot. A new 2.5-acre

affordable housing project will soon be under construction on Wallis Street.

Tallahassee City Commissioner Curtis Richardson said the area has seen better days.

"What a wonderful neighborhood it used to be. But as people died out and left, the younger folks didn't maintain the neighborhood, and we see what it looks like now. So that's exciting to know that we'll be rebuilding this neighborhood that once thrived on this side of town."

Construction is starting to place a total of 17 unattached and duplex housing units on the lot. All of the homes will come with price tags aimed at helping lower-income families achieve homeownership. That’s thanks in part to a community land trust that helps to reduce the cost of homes.
