A film screening partnership could grow into a much larger cultural collaboration and educational exploration for the area's young people

What began as a film screening event has turned into plans for an ongoing partnership between two educational resources in Tallahassee.

The film, "Shared Legacies," plays this Wednesday evening, Feb. 11 at the Challenger Learning Center. It documents how African Americans and Jewish people have historically worked together to fight for their rights. Barbara Goldstein, who heads the Holocaust Education Resource Council, says the film has one central message.

"Treat everybody with respect, and to be kind to everybody, whoever they are."

It's a message that Tonja Ward, co-founder of Champion's Ranch with her husband, former football and basketball player Charlie Ward, says she can totally endorse.

"I don't know if we'll ever arrive, but the way we'll get closer is by continuing to share the message to begin to have those moments where we have connection and we can be in the same space to practice the golden rule."

The screening is now sold out, but both Ward and Goldstein see this event as a jumping off point to share more connection. They're looking to combine their organization's forces to educate more young people on how their cultures and histories intersect.
