A free food distribution had Woodville area residents lining up early Saturday, February 7. The event took place at J. Lewis Hall Park.

The Leon County Commission, including the district's Commissioner Bill Proctor, voted to approve the free food initiative.

"It's an effort to undergird proper health, good health, and in particular as it reaches down all the way to having students school-ready and prepared come Monday morning," he remarked.

The county's Director of Human Services and Community Partnerships Abby Thomas said more such efforts are planned.

"It's the beginning of a great partnership with Farm Share and Carter's Corner. We anticipate doing at least 4 of these a year."

The latest metrics from the Capital Area Justice Ministry show nearly 30% of the county's residents are food insecure.
