A small army of volunteers made short work of Leon County's yearly Arbor Day observance on Saturday, January 24. Around a hundred volunteers showed up for the mass tree planting. Among them was a group of Florida A&M science majors, which included Brandi Jones.
"A lot of areas in Florida are getting rid of their wetlands so just increasing the green area, sustainability and air quality of these regions is really important."
The nearly 300 native trees were planted at the Saint Marks Headwaters Buck Lake Trailhead. David O'Keefe is the area's Leon County Commissioner.
"This is yet another expansion of the greenways and trails that Leon County is protecting. More and more acres, more and more miles of trails that the county is investing in protecting from future development."
Another county initiative, the Adopt-A-Tree program, provides thousands of native trees to local citizens to further expand the area's woodlands.
