Tallahassee was one of around 1,000 American cities to hold a memorial rally for Renee Good on Sunday, January 11. Good was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer last week in Minneapolis. Around 300 people braved the late afternoon wind chill in front of Florida’s Historic Capitol to honor her memory.
Many in the crowd carried signs critical of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. But the tone of the local rally was more like a religious service as several faith leaders spoke. One of them was Juana Jordan from the FAMU Wesley Foundation.
"It wasn't that she was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. It was really our moral failure to see God in one another."
Also speaking was Temple Israel's Stefanie Posner.
"May we open our eyes to possibility, our ears to dialog and our hearts to compassion."
Still, opposition to ICE remains a unifying principle. Some in the crowd promised to protest the City of Tallahassee Police Department's cooperation agreement with ICE at future city commission meetings.
