At least one of Tallahassee's so-called "food deserts" now has a nutritional oasis. The area's first DG Market held its grand opening over the weekend. The new D-G Market on Fred George Road offers a good selection of grocery items as well as fresh meats and produce. That's on top of such things as a large beverage selection, health and beauty aids, and other sundries. All of this is packed into a 16,000 square foot space, about half the size of the smallest Publix supermarket.

As to what the initials "D.G." stand for, it's Dollar General. The Tennessee-based retail chain operates some 20,000 low-cost, general merchandise outlets across 48 states.
