Leon County's Student District Advisory Council was given some serious homework at the December 9 school board meeting. Board Member Alva Smith gave the assignment to Council leader and Rickards Senior Aster Mary Frances-Templin.

"I would really like you to ask the group whether they know why kids don't come to school? And is there anything they're hearing amongst their peers about what would encourage better attendance," Smith remarked.

Her board colleague Laurie Lawson Cox agreed and further clarified the mission request.

"Why are students not coming to school and your peer information is very valuable because you guys live it every day. And then what motivates students to come to school, the reverse of that, too."

It's not the first time the students have been asked to help solve serious policy problems. They've also been looking into possible causes for students bringing weapons to school; especially firearms.
