Tallahassee's hometown stores were celebrating Small Business Saturday over the weekend and there were various ways for them to mark the occasion.
Jackie Skelding owns the Rare Bird shop on Sixth Avenue in the city's Midtown. She says her strategy is simply offering merchandise that can't be found anywhere else.
"We specialize in mid-century designer furniture, which obviously is not an impulse buy. And we also do a mix of other vintage designer goods and homewares and things for you and your home that are cool and vintage."
Meanwhile, a few miles north on Thomasville Road, Tallahassee Nursery's Outdoor Manager Jonathan Burns says the idea is to simply do what you do better than anyone.
"A lot of other places have plants, be they poinsettias or things you plant in the ground. Or even fresh-cut Fraser Firs like we have here. But they don't know how to take care of it or put the time into it. Quality, selection and service is what's kept us going for almost 90 years."
Just a few different ways for small businesses to stay competitive in the age when the Internet means almost every store is as close as your phone or laptop.
