Did you know, Carrabelle, Florida, located just over an hour southwest of Tallahassee, has an airport? Well, more of an air strip.

Local leaders recently asked Franklin County's state legislative delegation for money to help with renovations.

The project was supposed to cost around a million dollars and is already underway. The airstrip is being resurfaced, and three hangars are being built with a terminal office. But Carrabelle Mayor Sabrina Brown says the city needs an additional $265,000 to complete the plans.

"Without the additional funding, we would either have to leave the terminal unfinished or start the entire bid process over," Brown told her local lawmakers.

Brown is hoping those additional funds will come from the state legislature. She says the city has gotten eight bids for the work but due to rising costs of materials, the lowest bid was about 1.3 million. Officials say that means the city needs more from the state because the grant allocation originally awarded from the Florida Department of Transportation doesn't cover it.

During WWII, the U.S. Army Air Corps built an auxiliary landing field in Carrabelle. It was known as the Carrabelle Flight Strip. It now provides general aviation service primarily for charter planes.
