Veterans Day dawned with freezing temperatures. But that didn't put a chill on the yearly Operation Thank You at Tallahassee's Lake Ella American Legion Hall. Hundreds of military vets showed up for a pre-parade breakfast.

Elected officials and other community leaders worked the chow line as the veterans enjoyed a hearty breakfast of bacon, sausage, eggs, grits, gravy and biscuits. Post Commander Dennis Hall was grateful for all the help.

"For 13 years it's been a great partnership between us and the county."

And County Commission Chair Brian Welch noted the event was a metaphor for all that local government and human service organizations do year-round in Tallahassee to help those who served.

"I think the Operation Thank You breakfast really encapsulates the idea of what we want to do in Leon County and really in the whole community at large."

The county's veterans services office provides financial help to eligible veterans in need. That can include housing, utilities, temporary shelter, and transportation.
