Two months ago, a Tallahassee high school student won the title of Miss Juneteenth Florida, in recognition of the date in 1865 when news of the emancipation proclamation reached enslaved people in Texas—the last state where it was read. This Saturday, Oct. 11, she'll be competing this Saturday for the title of Miss Juneteenth USA.
For Corrin Elise Hobbs, the matter of food insecurity is something she takes very personally.
"I grew up surrounded by people who are facing food insecurity themselves. I took that issue to heart and when I was thinking about what I wanted my platform to be, that was the issue I knew I could address in all of Florida, within Tallahassee and even all across the country."
And that is the issue she plans to bring front and center if Tallahassee's own Corrin Elise Hobbs wins the national Miss Juneteenth title in Galveston, Texas on Saturday.
