Many residents of Tallahassee's Westminster Oaks retirement community liked having colorful crosswalks on nearby Dempsey Mayo Road. Community resident and former state lawmaker Marjorie Turnbull said motorists noticeably slowed down for the highly-visible crosswalks. Now that the state has ordered all such crosswalks removed. Turnbull said Westminster's community council is urging the those officials to exempt those nearby crosswalks from removal--especially as Dempsey Mayo is poised for expansion.

"And we know when it opens up to Welaunee, it's just going to be a speedway! The (Westminster) residents' council was looking at this as a current and a future problem that was only going to get worse."

So far, there's been no official response from the Florida Department of Transportation. Turnbull is a member of WFSU Public Media's Community Council.
