Leon County Sheriffs' staff and local kids have some soggy fun for a serious purpose

It was kids versus the Leon County Sheriffs Department at Tallahassee's Hope Community yesterday on Wednesday, July 2. The "battle" was fought with super-soakers and water balloons.

Sheriff's Department Public Information Officer Javonni Hampton said the kids, ranging in age from 3 to 13, first learned how to avoid contact with dangerous things like firearms. Then the water started flying between the youngsters and deputies. Hampton said more of these are planned.

"And so we're going to continue the 'Operation Cool Down.' It's part of our ongoing commitment to our community. We're going to be all in, all summer and you'll just never know where we'll show up next."

The whole idea, she said, is to forge a closer and friendlier connection between young people and law officers.
