A community campaign to feed hungry kids during the summer months packed thousands of snacks and raised tens-of-thousands of dollars on Saturday, May 31. That was the date for the yearly Full Summer event at Godby High School.
Full Summer founder Laurye Messer welcomed hundreds of volunteers with some good news.
"We raised a total of $40,280..." (cheers and applause)
Among all those volunteers was Lavoria Ofuani and her team from Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.
"We're here to pack the snacks. We're concerned about the children during the summer whether they're getting any food or not. So hopefully this will help."
Second Harvest of the Big Bend's Kristie Teal says the entire effort is a huge help when it comes to feeding the hungry.
"The Full Summer packing event is one of our feel-good events of the entire year. Laurye Messer and her entire Full Team have been doing this for years to pack snacks for kids so kids who are out of school and missing that food over the summer have some more option."
The final packing tally: more than 9,000 snack packs in just a few hours.
