Linda Rivers with the Friends of Lake Munson holds a 3-eyed plush fish, a symbol of the dangerous levels of contaminants in the water body and the danger that poses to animal and plant life.

Advocates say Lake Munson near the southwest corner of Tallahassee is literally in deep trouble. The Friends of Lake Munson group wants to revive an agreement between the county and state to clean up the water body.

Environmental scientist Sean McGlynn said the lake has a 10-foot layer of contaminated muck atop its natural clay bottom. And that’s not all….

"It's a beautiful lake if you don't look at the water. It's got exotic invasive plants, it has algal blooms that are toxic, there are dangerous island apple snails that carry rat lung disease and limpkins that are eating those."

The Friends of Lake Munson held a fundraising and awareness event Saturday at Lichgate. They’re urging the county and state to restore a cleanup plan that fell by the wayside.
